As hot meal program returns, Horizons Meals on Wheels needs volunteers


CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -- Horizons Meals on Wheels will resume delivering hot meals to homebound seniors starting June 1, but they're still in need of volunteers.

Horizons has been providing frozen meals and breakfast bags since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020.

If you would like to volunteer, more information on how to do so can be found here. Volunteers are asked to find a route that fits their schedule and then fill out the Volunteer Application, which can be found at the link above. If you have already filled out an application or have any questions, email Volunteer Coordinator Kami Hill at Routes are filled on a first come first serve basis.

If you are a returning volunteer or are brand new, you must attend a volunteer orientation session either in person or via Zoom. You can sign up for an orientation session by clicking here. The remaining orientation sessions are as follows:

  • Friday, May 21, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. (Zoom)
  • Wednesday, May 19, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. (In-person)
  • Monday, May 24, 1 - 2 p.m. (In-person)
  • Wednesday, May 26, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. (In-person)

Meal pick up times happen from 10:45 - 11:15 a.m. Monday - Friday. Pick up locations vary depending on if the route is in Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha or Marion. Click here to find pick up locations.

Horizons provides meals to almost 1,000 Linn County seniors each week through Meals on Wheels. Around 85% of Meals on Wheels routes are driven by volunteers.
