MARION, Iowa (KWWL) - The Linn-Mar School Foundation awarded its first scholarship in memory of Harper Leah this week. The annual award was started by Harper's mom Janessa Carr, after her four-year-old's tragic death in September 2020.
Carr says the scholarship is a way to honor her daughter, and continue to spread love as she would have.
"We still love and miss her. But anything we can do to honor her, that's what we're going to do," Carr said.
The scholarship was awarded to graduating senior Grace AbouAssaly on Monday night. Carr says AbouAssaly was very deserving of the award.
"This student was actively involved in so many activities. She loved and accepted everyone. She did a lot of service work; helping kids with special needs," Carr said.
Grace is also the daughter of Marion Mayor Nick AbouAssaly; she will use the scholarship to pay for part of her college tuition.
The scholarship is for $1,000 and will be awarded every year for the foreseeable future. If you would like to donate, do so at this link.
