World-class skatepark opens in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) -- A world-class skatepark and largest one in the country as of today, opened in Des Moines on Friday, May 7th.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday at the Lauridsen Skatepark in Des Moines.

This opening comes less than two weeks before the "Dew Tour" takes over and serves as a qualifying event for this summer's Olympics.

According to the Lauridsen Skatepark website, it is one of the largest open parks in the nation now.

Located at the north end of the Principal Riverwalk next to the Des Moines River, the 88,000 square feet attraction will showcase Olympic caliber park and street courses.

Other features skaters will enjoy include a promenade, flow bowl, amoeba pool, snake run, and a skate-able art piece entitled, "WOW". 

The park will be open until 10:30p.m. Saturday night, and from 6a.m. to 10:30p.m. Sunday.
