WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) today announced the regional winners of the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Awards.
KWWL was honored with the award for Continuing Coverage of the August 10th, 2020 Iowa Derecho.
KWWL competes in the Region Five Small Market Television category which includes stations in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. KWWL’s entry was a compilation of continuing coverage of the devastating derecho that tore through the Eastern Iowa viewing area on August 10th, 2020.
KWWL’s coverage was branded as “The Road To Recovery” and extensively covered the clean-up efforts in the days, weeks and months after the derecho.
To this day, KWWL continues to provide “Road To Recovery” updates on a weekly basis since this was such an impactful, historic event for so many Eastern Iowa viewers.
“The story of the derecho isn’t just about the day it hit or its immediate aftermath,” KWWL News Director Allison Gibson said. “Our team told the stories of recovery and resiliency, of our communities overcoming obstacles. This award is about the people we serve and I’m humbled to be recognized in this way for our efforts.”
“The regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award recipients we announce today produced extraordinary journalism that brought clarity and context to 2020’s biggest news stories,” RTDNA Chairwoman Andrea Stahlman said. “The winning work demonstrates dedication, determination, and a commitment to the highest ethical standards enshrined in RTDNA’s Code of Ethics.”
Regional winners automatically move on to the national round of consideration. Among the most prestigious awards in news, the Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community. Murrow Award-winning work demonstrates the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
