WASHINGTON (WPTA21) - President Joe Biden said his Administration is prepared to "move immediately" to begin vaccinating those under the age of 16.

Biden said 220 million vaccine shots were administered in total last week, and 105 million Americans are now fully vaccinated.

The vaccination rate for seniors, he noted, is now 70 percent.

The president aims to have that same milestone -- 70 percent -- for all adults by July 4.

“In two months, let’s celebrate our independence as a nation and our independence from this virus,” Biden said Tuesday afternoon. “The light at the end of the tunnel is actually growing brighter and brighter.”

Biden also said he wants to be aggressive if and when regulators approve the use of the COVID-19 vaccine on children. Initial approval would likely be for those 12 and older.

"The FDA and the FDA alone will make that decision," he said. "Today, I want American parents to know that if that announcement comes, we are ready to move immediately."

Biden said 20,000 pharmacy sites across the nation are ready to vaccinate children as soon as approval is given.
