WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – The ten recipients of the 2021 Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching have been announced. For 2021, the R.J. McElroy Trust received 500 nominations for 240 teachers in Black Hawk County. Teachers are nominated by students, parents, and fellow colleagues.

The ten teachers receiving the award are:

  • Pamela Bellows, 4th Grade Teacher, Aldrich Elementary School
  • Korina Carlson, 10th-12th Spanish Teacher, Union High School
  • Jane Cline, 2nd Grade Teacher, North Cedar Elementary School
  • Renae Drey, 1st-2nd Grade Teacher, St. Patrick Catholic School
  • Sheila Hollingsworth, 1st Grade Teacher, Irving Elementary
  • Jason Knittel, 9th & 10th Grade History Teacher, East High School
  • Amy McGovern, Talented & Gifted Teacher, Lou-Henry & Lowell Elementary School
  • Johannah Nanke, 9th & 11th Grade English Teacher, West High School
  • Lynne Ternus, 3rd Grade Teacher, Dysart-Geneseo Elementary School
  • Stacey Yoder, 7th & 9th Grade Math Teacher, Holmes Jr. High School

These ten award winners will each receive $1,000. In addition to that, the McElroy Trust is also awarding each Gold Star teacher an extra $500 to improve his or her classroom.

This is the 33rd year of the Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching, and the first virtual celebration. KWWL will be televising this year's McElroy Trust Gold Star Teacher awards ceremony Tuesday, May 18th on the CW 7.2 at 6 p.m.

The 2021 Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching is co-sponsored by the R.J. McElroy Trust and KWWL.
