WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – KWWL will televise the funeral for Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith on Friday, April 16th at 10 a.m., live from Independence Community High School.
Smith was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 9th during a standoff with an armed Grundy Center man.
Per the family’s wishes, KWWL will provide coverage from inside the Independence Community High School gymnasium only. There will be no video/cameras outside the gymnasium either before or after the service.
KWWL's on-air coverage will begin shortly before the service at 9:45 a.m. and our online coverage will begin at 10 a.m. The service is expected to run at least 90 minutes.
A visitation was scheduled on Thursday, April 15th at Reiff Family Center-Funeral Home and Crematory in Independence from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Masks are required at both the visitation and the funeral.
The family intends to establish a memorial scholarship in remembrance of Sgt. Smith.
A memorial fund approved by the family has been established at BankIowa in Independence.
