UPDATE: One man injured in officer-involved shooting in Waterloo

UPDATE 7:30 a.m. (KWWL) -- Authorities are releasing additional details about the officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.

Police said at about 12:45, Black Hawk County dispatch received a report of a man with a long gun on Commercial Street walking toward the downtown district.

Two deputies with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office arrived in the area and found the man near the West 6th Street bridge. As they made contact with him, authorities said the man pointed the weapon at the initial deputy at hip level and chased after the deputy.

A responding Waterloo police officer saw what was going on and fired at the male, striking him twice, officers said.

The man was taken to Allen Hospital for treatment. He was later taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Authorities are not releasing the extent of his injuries at this time.

The officer and deputies were uninjured.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.

Officers told KWWL the suspect was taken to the hospital.
