MANCHESTER, Iowa (KWWL) - Brehme Drug in Manchester is the only pharmacy in Delaware County that is authorized to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. As eligibility has opened up to most Iowans, the pharmacy has been approved for an increase in its allocation.

The Delaware County Health Department currently receives 200 doses of the vaccine each week. Most of them going toward the department's Regional Family Health partners. The health department has worked on getting the doses out to specific groups.

"We do realize we have quite a demand here in Delaware County that has not been met," Brehme Drug Owner and Pharmacist Ashley Brehme said.

The pharmacy has become a huge provider of vaccines in the county.

"I feel very proud that we have been able to increase that allocation and be able to reach so many more people this week," Brehme said.

Expecting to receive deliveries Wednesday, the pharmacy will increase their number of doses from 100, to 500. The provider now receiving more doses with their weekly allocations than the county health department.

"I'm getting another one hundred Moderna prime doses, along with 400 Johnson and Johnson doses," she said.

Brehme says the pharmacy will schedule larger vaccine clinic-type events as they receive more shots.

Brehme Drug is making its way down a waitlist, prioritizing the most vulnerable first. At one point there were about 1,900 people on the list, and now there are 800. Each one, eagerly anticipating a call.

"You try to suppress it I think until you get that call and think 'my turn will come but once it actually comes you feel pretty good about it," Manchester resident Cynthia Mitchell said.

Mitchell and her husband have spent some time on the waitlist. Not too long after being placed on it, they received the call to come in and get their first shot.

Now, three weeks later, they were able to come in to get their second dose, relieved to not have to wait anymore.

"Worked out really well for us," Mitchell said, "Even when she called to set up the first shot it just was kind of a weight lifted. It was like 'oh my gosh this is finally going to happen."

Brehme Drug is accepting anyone who wants to be on their waitlist. You can sign up on their website.
