Marion school board approves name change to “Mavericks”

MARION, Iowa (KWWL) - The school board for the Marion Independent School District voted Monday night to change the district's mascot from the Indians to the Mavericks.

The move comes after several months of gathering input and planning for a name change, after groups like the Meskwaki Nation said the name was insensitive and asked the district to change it.

Mavericks was chosen from a list of finalists and approved by the Board of education Monday night.

"I think most people see the positives that are coming through in this," Mike Manderscheid said, activities director for the high school. "For the most part, I think our kids are kind of excited as to where this could go."

VIP Branding is helping the school district come up with a new logo and Manderscheid says they also need to do things like rename the student section.
