LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- With the derecho causing more than half-a-million dollars in damage to their C Ave. location in Cedar Rapids and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army in Linn County set a 2020 Christmas fundraising goal of $711,000. They shattered that goal.
The Linn County chapter announced Friday the campaign raised nearly 1-million dollars... $993,084 to be exact. That total includes donations made to the red kettles, mail and walk-in donations as well as online contributions. While the bells stopped ringing on Christmas Eve, other donations through January 31 were credited to the campaign.
The local chapter told KWWL back in December that a couple who had never donated to their chapter before wrote a check for $50,000, the exact amount the campaign was behind on their donations at the time.
"The Cedar Rapids community has once again shown their love and support for those in need in our community," Captain Shawn DeBaar said. "We will not only be able to serve our neighbors in need in all the ways we normally do, but the increase in Christmas income will mean more families in need will be served."
The Waterloo/Cedar Falls and Dubuque chapters of the Salvation Army also reached their Christmas campaign goals. The Waterloo/Cedar Falls chapter raised $655,873.22, surpassing their goal of $601,000. The Dubuque chapter collected $250,183.41, eclipsing their goal of $224,000.
The money raised during the Christmas campaign is approximately 47% of the Linn County chapter's annual operating budget and is used to help provide services year-round. Those services include things like supplemental food boxes, meal programs, rent and utility assistance, case management, transportation assistance, emergency disaster services, youth programs, senior programs, and much more.
Donations are accepted year-round and can be mailed to The Salvation Army at 1000 C Ave. NW Cedar Rapids, IA 52405 or made online by clicking here.
Partnering with Toys for Tots, The Salvation Army in Linn County was also able to distribute more than 35,000 gifts to approximately 3,000 area children over the holiday season. Holiday food assistance was provided to more than 1,700 households as well.
