(KWWL) -- Millions tuned in for the NBA Finals this year, however, the league suffered a massive ratings hit.
According to TVLine, preliminary findings show about 5.7 million people watched game five on Friday night between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat.
That's down nearly 70% from the 18.22 million people who watched game five of the finals in 2019.
Neilsen said the finals were optimized for health and safety this year, not TV ratings. All four major sports leagues, including college football, are in-season in September and October, which may increase competition and audience fragmentation.
The Lakers beat the Heat 106-93 on Sunday in game six. The Lakers now have 17 championship titles, which ties the Boston Celtics for the most in league history. LeBron James also collected his fourth championship.
