Linn County inmate found unresponsive, dies at hospital

LINN COUNTY, Iowa. (KWWL) - An inmate from Marion is dead after being found not breathing and without a pulse.

According to a release from the Linn County Sheriff, correctional officers were told about a medical emergency Wednesday, October 7 around 4:20 p.m. Inmates and officers attempted CPR on Ryan Edward Bailey, 40, of Marion before he was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Bailey was booked into the Linn County Jail about six hours prior at 10:12 a.m. Medical staff, upon his booking, noted a potential knee injury from a scuffle with arresting officers.

Jail deputies had just conducted a cell check in Bailey's block about 36 minutes before the emergency and didn't note anything of concern or out of the ordinary. Video surveillance of the cell block didn't show any apparent cause for Bailey's medical emergency.

The Linn County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine Bailey's cause of death. The death has also been reported to the Iowa State Jail Inspector.
