DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) -- For weeks, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Dubuque Community Schools hasn't been more than a handul.

As of Friday afternoon, there were 27 active cases in total between students and staff. Sixteen students are reported to have an active case of COVID-19 and 11 staff are infected.

For the students, 13 out of 16 come from the high schools. Hempstead High School has 1 case in the 10th grade and 4 cases are among seniors. There is one case there among staff.

Dubuque Senior High School reports one case among its freshman class, 3 for the sophmores, and 2 cases for each of the remaining grades. There is one staff member reported as an active case.

There are four cases split between staff at the three middle schools with only 1 case among the students. That case is at Roosevelt.

These numbers only reflect active cases, meaning they are showing symptoms and/or are self-isolating.

Cases among students doing fully online learning are only reported on the district's COVID-19 dashboard if they participate in school activities that are held in person.
