IOWA CITY, Iowa. (KWWL) - The University of Iowa's Dance Marathon will go virtual because of COVID-19.

What is known as the “Big Event” celebrates students' year-round dedication to the children and families served by the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

It requires participants to forego sleep, sitting and caffeine for 24 hours. Live entertainment and speakers pass the time.

The Big Event, originally scheduled for Feb. 5 and 6, 2021, will now take place Feb. 26 and 27.

"In the interest of the health and safety of our families, students, community members, and generous supporters, it has been decided that the Big Event will not be held in-person," team members said.

Last year, Hawkeyes raised $2,879,755.26 for the kids.
