UPDATE (9/17 12:15 p.m.) -- 16-year-old identified as victim in Benton County bus crash


UPDATE (9/16 9:30 p.m.) -- Benton Community School District said a Benton High School student died in the crash involving a van and Benton Community School bus.

The district said it is mourning the significant loss to the student's family and school community. The district will provide students and families with counseling services.

The driver of the school bus and student passengers were evaluated at the scene. Some were taken by local EMS or parents to healthcare facilities for evaluation and treatment for minor injuries.

The district will continue working with local law enforcement and other agencies as they investigate what occurred and determine appropriate next steps.


UPDATE (9/16 11:15 a.m.) -- According to the Iowa State Patrol, there was one fatality in Wednesday morning's crash. Five juveniles on the bus had minor injuries. The bus driver did not have any injuries.

In the accident report, Iowa State Patrol said an individual driving a van hit the bus after veering onto the shoulder of the road and over correcting. Authorities said the driver died at the scene.

Multiple agencies assisted, including the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Belle Plaine and Keystone Fire Departments, Belle Plaine Ambulance and the Iowa DOT.

KEYSTONE, Iowa (KWWL) -- The Benton County Sheriff's Office is responding to a crash involving a school bus.

15th Avenue between 72nd Street and Highway 30 is closed.

Our KWWL crew said firefighters and ambulances are on scene.

We reached out to Benton Community School District superintendent, Dr. Pamela Ewell. She is also at the scene.

The district and the sheriff's office were unable to provide any further details.
