WATERLOO, Iowa - As the school year starts, students and teachers are undergoing many new normals. Waterloo School District has been sending back grade levels in groups, and today was the first day for fourth, fifth, and eighth grades.

"KWWL" was able to get an inside look at Irving Elementary's layout and their plan of action for students.

HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • all desks have individual, clear dividers
  • everyone must follow PPE guidelines
  • student pods for lunch, recess, and the bathroom
  • water fountains are off-limits
  • assigned cafeteria seating

Feeling confident the school's format, fourth-grade teacher, Randi Krull, said their plan has made her comfortable coming back to the classroom and believes it's putting more families at ease.

"We have been making phone calls to touch base with parents just to see where they're at, how they're feeling, have any questions or concerns, just checking in to make sure that they're coming that first day of school," Krull said, "we've had very good communication with those families."
