Operation BBQ Relief providing derecho support with thousands of hot meals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) - Everyone could use a bit of barbeque, but especially those affected by the derecho. On Friday, Operation BBQ Relief prepared around 8,000 meals to hand out at distribution sites around the Cedar Rapids area.

Both Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and State Representative/1st Congressional district candidate Ashley Hinson dropped by to speak with volunteers.

"If we could make it go away we would, but if we can give them a meal that for a minute that hot, a hot barbeque meal that takes their mind away for a little, God bless you we're sorry what you're dealing with," Director Mike Richter said.

Native Iowan Ashton Kutcher also gave his support to Operation BBQ Relief.

Since Sunday, Operation BBQ Relief has given away 45,800 meals and today they celebrated their 8 millionth meal since their inception in 2011.
