Local barbecue raises money to buy face masks for schools

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) - The start of the academic year is right around the corner, but are schools prepared? Local barbecue restaurant, Blue Barn BBQ, has been making sure schools are covered by having multiple fundraisers.

Owner, Aaron Broshar, said he knew there was a concern for students going back to school, and wanted to do something to make a positive impact.

"We knew that services and the cities were going to step and fill in those gaps," Broshar said, "but making sure everyone was covered right away was kind of our concern."

In efforts to prepare schools for the fall, Broshar and local students have held multiple fundraisers.

Fundraisers they've done:

  • lemonade stand
  • sell hand-made bracelets
  • sweet tea stand
  • raffles

All proceeds go to their fund to help buy 16,000 cloth masks for Waterloo and Cedar Fall students. Broshar said his restaurant may look like the ring leader of this operation, but it's been the kids who've tied it all together.

"I couldn't be prouder to see them see the thought process, work through their heads and see the actual results at the end of it," Broshar said, "they are coming out and doing the work and really making a positive difference."

The fundraiser is halfway to its goal and Broshar is highly encouraging people to come by and give back in any way they can.

The last day to to make a donation is Sunday, August 9th.
