IT’S OFFICIAL: MLB confirms ‘Field of Dreams’ game cancellation due to pandemic

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (KWWL) - Major League Baseball has officially announced the cancellation of the 'Field of Dreams' game in Dyersville.

The game was set to happen next Thursday, August 13, between the Cardinals and the White Sox.

On Monday, MLB reporter Ken Rosenthal reported the cancellation. MLB confirmed the cancellation is due to the pandemic and scheduling issues, as the Cardinals deal with a COVID-19 outbreak.

MLB says that they hope for the game to be played next August as a part of the 2021 regular season. They say the game would feature the White Sox as one of the participants.

MLB Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. said: "We made every effort to go ahead with a first-class event for the people of Iowa, admirers of the film and fans generally. Unfortunately, we have come to the conclusion that it would not be prudent to ask Clubs to step outside their normal routines, given the evolving public health challenges. We hope to host this event in Iowa in 2021."

Stick with KWWL as we look at how the cancellation has affected the community and businesses of Dyersville. We will have full reports Tuesday evening at 5 & 6 and Wednesday morning on Today in Iowa.
