Woman arrested for alleged 2009-2010 relationship with student

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KWWL) – A woman has been arrested for allegedly having a relationship with a student at the Independence High School.

According to Independence Police, Kari Jean Schwartz was arrested Friday, July 3, 2020 for Sexual Exploitation of a Minor by a School Employee. The charge is a Class D Felony and carries up to five years in prison.

The arrest and charge stems from a report made in January 2020 that alleged the incident happened during the 2009-2010 school year. The report said Schwartz established an inappropriate relationship with a student which resulted in inappropriate sexual conduct.

Schwartz's hearing for an initial appearance was July 6 where her preliminary hearing was set for July 20 and her bond set at $5,000 cash. She posted her bond and also waived her preliminary hearing.
