WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - Water park by day, but drive-in movie theater by night. Starting next week, the Waterloo Center for the Arts will take its summer movie series to Lost Island Waterpark.

Originally located at the Riverloop Amphitheater, the center has turned its "Cinema on the Cedar," series into, "The Lost Drive-In."

Sponsored by Veridian Credit Union, the drive-in will include a:

  • 225 car limit
  • required online reservation
  • bathroom and concessions area
  • employees directing traffic flow

Having more space to social distance, the center's development and marketing manager Craig Laue said the center is happy they can do this for the community.

"It's our job to keep people uplifted and positive through this pandemic and whatnot," Laue said, "and find things people that people can enjoy either at home or they can take the family to the lost drive-in."

Even though there has been a number of changes to the summer series, Laue told "KWWL" the community's response has been overwhelmingly positive.

"We made a social media post last week, on our Facebook page with the logo and organic reach, which is not paid boost or anything like that, it has reached over 62,000 people, it's had over 670 shares, 190 comments, almost 200 reactions," Laue said.

"So the response has been very good that we're going out to Lost Island."

Gates will open at 8 pm and mini hand sanitizers will be given out upon entry. Admission is free and opening night will be Saturday, July 25th.
