City of Newell under a “do not use” water advisory for possible mercury contamination

NEWELL, Iowa (KWWL) — The City of Newell in Buena Vista County is reporting of possible mercury contamination in the drinking water. The City's water supply operator examined what appeared to be a small amount of mercury in a wastewater drain the City's treatment plant this morning.

The Iowa DNR is recommending using bottled or an alternative source of water for all uses especially drinking, infant formula, making ice, preparing food or brushing teeth.

The DNR also recommends people avoid skin contact with the water. It's also important to give safe water for pets. Do not boil water as that could concentrate any contaminants.
