Two robberies, two arrests in Cedar Rapids Sunday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids police arrested two suspects in two separate robberies that occurred Sunday morning.

The first occurred at the DoubleTree by Hilton on 1st Avenue NE. Police were called around 6:30 a.m. for a suspect who had forced entry into the employee entrance while displaying what was thought to be a handgun. Juvernal Habyarimana, 41, said the manager.

An employee contacted police and they managed to take the suspect into custody.

Habyarimana faces charges of Robbery-1st Degree and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine.  No injuries were reported.  The weapon was determined to be a replica firearm.

The second incident happened less than an hour later when a woman reported a man displayed a box cutter while she was stopped at a red light near 13th Street and 1st Avenue SE.

The man, identified as 32 year-old Shevonald Lee Gibbs, opened the car door and made the woman drive to the FasFuel on 1st Ave. SE.

Police say Gibbs stole an cash from the woman. She was able to safely escape and notify police.

Gibbs was taken into custody and charged with Robbery-1st Degree. The woman was not injured.
