CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) — Around 1:30 am this morning, officials were called to the 1200 block of 11th Street in Cedar Rapids following reports of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, Cedar Rapids Fire Department personnel deployed hoselines and quickly knocked down the fire coming from the backside of the residence.
Ventilation was used to remove products of combustion to allow for full extinguishment.
One person was home at the time and did not require medical treatment.
Reports say the incident was caused by an oil splatter while the resident was cooking.
The resident had attempted to put the fire using a portable fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful.
The fire from the kitchen directly damaged the kitchen and living room areas, creating substantial amounts of smoke affecting all parts of the single-level home.
Cedar Rapids law enforcement will conduct and investigation to conclude the official cause of the fire.
