(KWWL) - People in Mechanicsville are assessing damage and cleaning up after this afternoon’s storm.
A tornado was confirmed in the area.
KWWL spoke with a woman who says her family only had a few minutes to take shelter before the tornado came.
Resident Lori Johnson lives just outside the downtown strip in Mechanicsville.
The tornado tore her porch, knocking off pillars, and ripped the siding and doors off of her shed.
However, she says she's grateful her and her family made it out unharmed.
“Got my dad to the bathtub safely and it just came across the field from the south, you could hear and feel it, the pressure of it and it certainly does sound like a freight train,” Johnson said.
Friends and neighbors have been working to help the family clean up.
Another homeowner in the area said the tornado did extensive damage to his barn, shed and roof of his home but no one there was hurt.
KWWL also received reports of downed powerlines in the area due to the storm.
