Iowa Strong: Iowa native creates 300-person virtual choir to spread message: you’ll never walk alone

(KWWL) - An Iowa native is putting his musical talents to inspiring use by spreading a message across the world as the coronavirus pandemic continues: you'll never walk alone.

Harrison Sheckler, from Charles City, gathered 300 people from 15 countries to virtually perform 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from 'Carousel,' a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Sheckler, who is currently working on his Masters degree in piano performance at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, says he spent over 200 hours promoting, organizing submissions, and video editing the project.

"Arriving home in Iowa, I found comfort in playing this beautiful song from the musical ‘Carousel,’ which coincidentally is celebrating its 75th anniversary," said Sheckler. "What started to fill the void of music collaboration has evolved to new meaning for me with the lengthened quarantine. Hopefully, the words, ‘you’ll never walk alone,’ along with the visual of 300 people joining together offers the audience some comfort and peace during this time.”

Sheckler completed the project at his parents' home in Iowa, where he has been since classes at Brooklyn College went online in March. Among the 300 performers are over 50 Iowa high school students from across the state.
