DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) - Opening Doors, a shelter for homeless women, recently received a $3,000 grant for coronavirus aid.
Carol Gebhart, Executive Director of Opening Doors, said the grant will be used towards utilities and purchasing supplies. She said they expect to see higher utility bills because their clients are spending more time indoors.
The shelter has had to make adjustments to protect their staff and clients from COVID-19. Including sanitizing common areas and keeping everyone at a safe distance.
However, Gebhart said they want to make sure they are giving support and supply entertaining items to help their clients during this difficult time.
"It's talking about your fears and anxieties and just doing what we can to support everyone every day," said Gebhart. "And then we brought in and purchased a bunch of activities like adult coloring, more games, cards, things to keep people busy while they're in the shelter."
Gebhart said none of their clients or staff have experienced any flu-like symptoms.
