FAIRBANK (KWWL) -- Marty McKowen finished on top for the first time in a 37 year career. The longtime Wapsie Valley coach led his 8th seeded Warriors to an unlikely state title when they knocked off Bishop Garrigan in the class 1A state final two weeks ago.

This week he added another honor. The Des Moines Register named McKowen the All-Iowa Boys' Basketball Coach of the Year.

The Warriors advanced to the 2020 state tournament despite being just the No. 4 seed in their district. They then opened the tournament with a 49-45 upset over top ranked Lake Mills. After beating Montezuma in the semis, McKowen picked up career win No. 596 when his team took down second ranked Bishop Garrigan to earn the 1A title.
