WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - The coronavirus outbreak has put a damper on multiple community events, with the celebration of the 2019 Cedar Valley United Way Campaign being one of them.
Under usual circumstances, over 300 people would have gathered to celebrate the year's campaign, led by Steve Carignan and Angela Weekley, but this year, the celebration is taking place via a news release.
Drum roll... the 2019 Cedar Valley United Way Campaign raised $2,671,308.25. 12,000 individuals and 165 different organizations donated.
All of the money raised will be reinvested back into the community and will support United Way's mission "via grants which are distributed to partner agencies in the areas of health, education and financial stability." The United Way Community Impact Teams will review grant applications and begin distributing funds July 1.
"The United Way is a critical support system for our service agencies and citizens. I was honored to be a part of it," said Carignan. Weekley added, "I come from a background that required me to benefit from several agencies supported by the campaign. I have given to United Way since I was 16, knowing that some of the dollars would come back to help me and my family."
