Northeast Iowa Food Bank receives $50,000 COVID-19 relief grant

BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is receiving a $50,000 grant from The Black Hawk County COVID-19 Cooperative Disaster Response Fund.

It's the first grant that the fund of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa has made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant will be used to match gifts to support the organization’s work in Black Hawk County.

All donations to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness Fund will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 in an effort to meet the current and future needs of the organization as they arise due to the impacts of the coronavirus.

With 75% of the Food Bank’s food supply being donated grocery items, they anticipate a significant cost increase to continue operating. In addition, as social-distancing remains a key priority to slow the spread of COVID-19, the food bank has also seen a significant decrease in volunteers.

Funds from the grant will be released on a rolling basis as fundraising continues throughout the COVID-19 disaster, making it possible to move resources quickly and to adapt to evolving needs in subsequent phases of crisis recovery efforts.
