FORT DODGE (KWWL) -- In a week of bad news, Iowa fans finally had something to be happy about on Wednesday. Fort Dodge star Drake Ayala, one of the top recruits in the state, announced his commitment to Tom Brands and the Hawkeye wrestling team.
"To be honest on all my visits that's where I felt the most comfortable," said Ayala, "and I think that's where I can continue to grow the most and just improve the most I guess."
The junior ended the season as the No. 9 pound-for-pound wrestler in the country, the highest ranking for an in-state recruit in eight years. For Ayala, staying close to home played a big factor.
"I think if I was going across the country it would be a lot harder than it would be staying home," said the two-time state champion, "which I think I could have done that fine, but I just think this is the best place for me."
Ayala heads in to his senior season looking to finish on finals night for the fourth straight year as he chases a third state title. He's the fourth member of Iowa's 2021 recruiting class.
