UPDATE: Police say two men detained at a Waterloo Kwik Star could be connected to an attempted robbery Wednesday morning.

Police responded in mass to the gas station on Cedar Bend Street around 1 p.m. Both the Waterloo Police Department and the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene where two men were reportedly taken into custody.

There hasn't been an update on those two men or their conditions. Authorities expect to release further information tomorrow as they're working to "operate safely" while checking out multiple angles.

Witnesses say the guards with the armored car from Rochester Armored Car Security Services fired in self-defense.

"I just yelled throughout the office for everybody to get on the ground. I just glanced out there and saw guns drawn and I saw a couple of rounds go off. At that point I just wanted everyone to be safe." said Dr. Keith Whittemore, whose office is next door to the bank. "We could see the victim was on the ground and guns were still drawn by the security forces so at that point we thought it safe to resume activity."

Both Lou Henry Elementary and Hoover Middle School went on lock down for a time following the shooting with one exception. Police requested a French interpreter from Lou Henry to assist in getting a statement from a witness who's car window sustained damage.

The lock down was lifted shortly before noon.

UPDATE: We're learning a male suspect is being treated for gunshot wounds after a shots fired incident.

Waterloo Police were called to the 3100 block of Kimball Avenue around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Investigators say people in a vehicle were attempting to rob an armored car in the US Bank parking lot.

That's when shots were fired.

At least one suspect, who was injured, was unable to getaway in a vehicle.

Police later located the unoccupied vehicle a few blocks from US Bank.

Police haven't said how many suspects were involved in the incident.

No names are being released at this time.

Anyone with information should contact the Waterloo Police Department.
