Sentencing date set for man convicted of killing Michelle Martinko

SCOTT COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- The man convicted of killing Michelle Martinko in Cedar Rapids more than 40 years ago will be sentenced next month.

Court records show Jerry Burns is set to be sentenced on April 17. Burns was found guilty of first-degree murder last month in the December 1979 stabbing death of Martinko.

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School senior was found stabbed to death in her family's car in the Westdale Mall parking lot. Burns was arrested and charged with the 18-year-old's murder on the anniversary of her death in 2018.

Burns faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
