Firefighters respond to possible Waterloo bowling alley fire

Waterloo (KWWL) -- Waterloo Fire Rescue responded a fire at the Maple Lanes Bowling Center.

The Maple Lanes Bowling Center is in the 2600 block of University Avenue.

The owners tell KWWL, it was a robbery turned arson.

Between 4:00 and 4:30A.M two or three suspects cut the power to the building with an overnight cleaning employee in the building.

The employee was made to get on the ground as the suspects tried to gain access to the bowling alley safe.

We're told the suspects also tried to break-in to vending machines.

The suspects allegedly then started a fire. Several accelerants were in the building for cleaning purposes.

The employee was able to escape and run to a nearby fire station to get help.

The fire department responded at 4:39A.M.

The building has heavy fire and smoke damage.

At 8:00 Tuesday morning, crews were still fighting an active fire inside the walls on the west side of the building in the pro-shop.

This is a developing story. Stick with KWWL on air and online as more details become available.
