WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) -- A four-year-old girl in Waterloo nearly died and is now blind because of the flu.

Jade DeLucia first told her parents she wasn't feeling well on Christmas Eve. Amanda Phillips and Seth Delucia did what most parents do, Tylenol, fluids, and rest but after finding her unresponsive Christmas morning they rushed her to a local hospital.

For nearly two weeks Jade was hooked up to machines after being transported to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. MRI results showed extensive brain damage and doctors weren't sure what her condition would be after waking up.

She has now lost her sight due to the illness.

Jade returned home from the hospital on Jan. 9 and doctors say the damage is likely permanent.

However, Jade's mother says it will be 6 months before they can evaluate whether her daughter will regain her sight, according to NBC.

gofundme started by a family friend has raised more than $37,000 so far. The family has also started a support group on Facebook where people can follow along Jade's journey to recovery.
