Setting new 2020 fitness goals: Where do you begin?

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) - As we ring in the New Year, many people are setting new fitness goals. But where should you start if you haven't been to the gym in a long time?

KWWL visited the new Orange Theory Fitness in Cedar Falls.

Owner Devin Range admits fitness doesn't always come easy.

"Working out is not fun for any of us," Range said with a laugh. "But it's something that I think for us at Orange Theory, we talk about more life. Fitness is one of those things that helps us achieve that."

He said getting to the gym is often the most challenging part of the battle, but he encourages you to stick with it.

"The first step is the hardest," he said. "Once you get that going, it should take care of itself."

Bringing a partner or trying a group class with an instructor may help, too.

"Find a friend," he said. "Accountability is everything. Organic accountability is great. You don't have as much fear of doing your own thing, or 'What workout should I do?'"

It's easy to get discouraged if you fall short of your fitness goals, so Range tells his clients to start small.

"Set short term. Maybe, it's, 'I want to work out twice this week,' and then in a couple weeks, it's working out four times. It's those little things that you can find success sooner that it's going to sustain you to keep you going," he said.
