Study: Iowa ranked as the 10th most moved from state in 2019

IOWA (KWWL) -- Iowa ranks No. 10 on the list of Most Moved from States in 2019.

According to the 2019 National Movers Study by United Van Lines, the nation’s largest household goods mover, Iowa ranks in the top 10 states that have the most residents move out.

In 2019, more residents moved out of Iowa than into the state, as 55 percent of Iowa moves were outbound.

The top outbound states (with 250 United Van Lines moves or more) for 2019 were:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Illinois
  3. New York
  4. Connecticut
  5. Kansas
  6. Ohio
  7. California
  8. Michigan
  9. North Dakota
  10. Iowa

The Midwest region continues to see more residents leaving than moving in, with nearly 57 percent of all moves within the Midwest U.S. being outbound moves. This year’s study reflects continuing trends of Americans moving to the Mountain West (56.5 percent inbound moves) and the South (54.1 percent inbound moves).

The top inbound states (with 250 United Van Lines moves or more) of 2019 were:

  1. Idaho
  2. Oregon
  3. Arizona
  4. South Carolina
  5. Washington
  6. District of Columbia
  7. Florida
  8. South Dakota
  9. North Carolina
