HOLIDAY FUN: Family events happening this weekend

SATURDAY, DEC. 7

JOHN DEERE TRACTOR AND ENGINE MUSEUM

The museum is inviting families to their 'Join the Cheer at John Deere!' holiday event. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in activities and can get a free photo with Santa. Local choirs and musicians will perform throughout the day. Cookies and hot cocoa will be served. Admission is free.

A MERRY MILLWORK MARKET

Gronen, Wicked River Event Productions, and the Millwork Night Market team are teaming up to host a free holiday event for families. You can warm up under tents and shop local crafts, sips and bites.

DETAILS: Schmid Innovation Center Courtyard, 955 Washington Street, Dubuque; 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

SNOWFLAKE EXPRESS

The Snowflake Express is steaming back into Northeast Iowa, giving children the chance to ride on a real locomotive. Santa and train conductors will be on board. Children will also get a story, hot chocolate and cookies, and a souvenir sleigh bell.

Tickets are still available for this year’s ride, and are available at www.magicalmixkids.org.

DETAILS: The train rides will depart at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. from the Open Bible Church in downtown Waterloo.

The event is a fundraiser for local charity The Magical Mix Kids, which raises money to take chronic and terminally ill children from Eastern Iowa to Disney World.

VESTERHEIM'S NORWEGIAN CHRISTMAS

Ring in the season with Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, at a Norwegian Christmas Celebration.

This lively day of events features fun holiday traditions, concerts by local groups, take-home crafts, folk-art demonstrations and sales, live goats, and a pop-up café serving Norwegian holiday specialties.

Children receive free admission to the Main Building when accompanied by an adult, and performances in the Bethania Church and outdoor activities are free.

DETAILS: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

IOWA CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S '8TH ANNUAL ARTS AND CRAFTS BAZAAR AND HOLIDAY BOOK SALE'

Shoppers will find a wide selection of unique gifts from quilts and knitted items to jewelry, holiday ornaments, and more.

DETAILS: The craft bazaar will be held in meeting rooms A, B and C at the Library, 123 S. Linn St. The used book sale will be held in Meeting Room D; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shoppers can name their own price all day at the book sale.

Proceeds from the Arts & Crafts Bazaar and book sale benefit the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, which supports the Summer Reading Program and other Library programs and collections.

SUMMER OF ART'S HOLIDAY ART MARKET

This year, shoppers can visit more than 100 fine artists including 79 from Iowa, as well as artists from Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Attendees can browse the amazing ceramics, fiber, drawing, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and wood items.

The booths will be set up throughout the first floor in the North Room, South Room, Lobby, Main Lounge and Hubbard Commons (all accessible off of Madison Street).

Attendance at the Holiday Art Market is free.

DETAILS: The show will be open on Saturday, December 7th from Noon – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Iowa Memorial Union (125 N Madison Street)

HOLIDAY CHAOS

The Upper Iowa University (UIU) Recreation Center will host a bit of “Holiday Chaos."

Children of all ages are invited to attend the free event.

The activities include a Reindeer Boot Camp obstacle course, an open gym, ornament and cookie decorating, and a letters to Santa station. All Santa letters will be taken to a local Macy’s store for special delivery to the North Pole. The public is also invited to share in the holiday spirit and help bring joy to area children by donating new unwrapped toys at the event.

DETAILS: The event is from 1-3 p.m. at the Fayette Campus recreation center.

GREENE SQUARE

The 2019 official City of Cedar Rapids Christmas tree is cut, transported, set and strung with lights.

The tree will be lit on Saturday, December 7 at 5:30 p.m. in Greene Square.

SUNDAY, DEC. 8

SENSITIVE SANTA

Lindale Mall invites children with all spectrums of special needs to a sensory-friendly holiday experience.

Families will have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of the season prior to the center’s opening for a quieter, more subdued experience. In addition to visiting Santa, there will be some healthy snacks, crafts, puzzles, and coloring pages available for the children.

Sensitive Santa provides a safe, controlled environment for families and children with special needs to enjoy the holiday season. The experience includes alternative seating options for children taking photos with Santa, as well as muted lights, quiet music, and reduced center traffic to help lessen sensory stimuli.

The event is free to attend, and Santa photo packages will be available for purchase.

Each family or group is asked to RSVP in advance by reserving one ticket.
