UNI football selected to FCS playoffs, but denied top-8 seed

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — UNI head football coach Mark Farley felt his team had done enough to earn one of the eight national seeds in the FCS playoffs. That, however, didn’t happen when the selections were announced Sunday morning. The top-8 seeds earn a first round bye.

Instead the Panthers will host Pioneer League champion San Diego in the UNI-Dome on Saturday.

UNI rolls in to the playoffs as the second place team in the Missouri Valley Football conference. The Panthers won four of their final five games including a 38-7 win over Western Illinois in Saturday’s regular season finale. All four of their losses came against ranked FBS and FCS opponents.

League counterpart South Dakota State earned the 7th seed in the bracket despite the fact the Jackrabbits finished third in the conference and lost three of their final five games, two of those to unranked opponents.

Kick-off between UNI and San Diego is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday in Cedar Falls.
