Grundy Center falls short in Class A State Title Game

In class A — Grundy Center playing their first final since 19-88 facing a stellar West Hancock rushing attack —

but the Spartans ground game struck first — Logan Knaack — the sophomore — showing incredible scrambling ability — and he takes it 57 yards for the opening score — 7, nothing Spartans early —

but the Eagles respond with Tate Hagen — had a hundred first half rushing yards and 2 scores as they led 14 to 10 at the break —

Second half — it’s Hagen for a third time — this one from the 10 — West Hancock led 21 to 10 —

but Grundy Center didn’t go away — had been waiting all year to pull this one out — as Cale Hendricks — off the lateral pass hits Nick Ascher in the endzone — that on 4th and long pulled the Spartans within 7 —

but they coudn’t stop the Eagles final drive — Hagen finished with 233 yards — and the first down sealed it — Gtundy Center comes up just short 21, 17 —

Logan Knaack/Grundy Center Sophomore

“From where we came, we lost a lot of seniors last year. We played as many games as you can in the state of Iowa, so this is amazing.”

Travis Zajac/Grundy Center Head Coach

“Twenty one points is the most points we’ve given up this year. We’ve lost two games by a total of five points. One of those was a state championship. Our kids are as tough as they come.”
