2019 Veterans Day events around eastern Iowa

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – Monday, November 11, the nation will honor those who have served our country in the armed forces.  Many events are planned around eastern Iowa for our veterans and active duty service members.


Students at Columbus Catholic appreciate the sacrifices our veterans have made, and they want to honor them at the high school on Veterans Day, November 11.

The students will host a free breakfast for veterans and active duty service members at 7:30 a.m., followed by a program at 9 a.m.  The program will include a guest presentation by Retrieving Freedom and their service dogs.

The Sullivan Brothers Post 1623 is hosting a soup and sandwich lunch for veterans on Monday.

It’ll be from noon until 2 p.m.  It’s free for veterans.


AMVETS Post 49 in Cedar Falls will have a Veterans Day ceremony at 5 p.m.  This includes a punch bowl ceremony, and the first drink is free for veterans all day.


The Waterloo Veterans Memorial Hall Commission will hold its annual Veterans Day program on Monday.

It will begin at 10:15 a.m. and end at 11 a.m. with a rifle salute and the playing of Taps by the local veterans service organizations’ Honor Guards.

Everyone is invited to attend.  The Waterloo Veterans Memorial Hall is located at 655 Cedar St., downtown Waterloo.


The Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum will celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 11 by offering free admission to all veterans and active duty service members.

The museum, located at 503 South Street in Waterloo, will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Iowa City Transit is offering free rides to veterans and their families on Monday.

Riders will need to show a military ID or other identification that indicates veteran status.

Iowa City Transit will be operating normal hours on Veterans Day.


In Cedar Rapids, there will be a traditional program at the Veterans Memorial Building (50 2nd Avenue) from 10 until 11 a.m. on Monday.

This will include posting of the colors, a guest speaker, a volley salute, and more.

This event is put on by the Metro Veterans Council.


Iowa State will have a Gold Star Hall ceremony on Monday at 3:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union (2229 Lincoln Way in Ames).

According to the Iowa Dept. of Veterans:

“This important ceremony honors our Iowa State students who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting for the freedoms that we cherish. Their names are carved into the limestone walls of Gold Star Hall in the Memorial Union, so that we may both remember and honor their service to our country, which merits our deep respect.”
