Grundy Center beats Belle Plaine 28-14 to advance in Class A

BELLE PLAINE (KWWL) – Grundy Center used big plays to overcome a halftime deficit and the Spartans defense held on for a 28-14 at Belle Plaine. The Spartans opened the scoring on a Zach Opheim 52 yard TD run to make it 7-0. The Plainsmen would trim the score to 7-6 on a 66 yard TD run by Luke DeMeulenaere. Belle Plaine would then take the lead at the end of the first half on a Trevin Straight 2 yard TD run. In the 2nd half, a long drive for the Plainsmen stalled at the Spartans 17 yard line. After the turnover on downs, Spartans QB Logan Knaack connected with Cale Hendricks for an 83 yard TD to tie the score. After a Plainsmen fumble on their next drive, another long pass from Knaack to Hendricks put the Spartans inside the 5 yard line. A few plays later, Knaack’s quarterback sneak from the 1 yard line put the Spartans ahead for good. They’ll head to MFL MarMac next week in the 2nd round of the Class A playoffs.
