Columbus Sailors ready for state football playoffs

WATERLOO(KWWL)–In his sixth season as head coach Brad Schmit has finally turned the corner with this football program….Columbus had 8 wins this season…the Sailors had a total of wins in Schmit’s first four years.

Seniors Ben Sinnott and Ray Siedel remembers watching those lean seasons.

Columbus Senior Tailback Ray Seidel “I remember freshman season our JV coach looked at our JV team and said you guys are going to state and ever since then we have been really working on our weights and stuff.”

Columbus senior tight end defensive end Ben Sinnott “We knew we had a really good group of guys in our class and we have always been pretty successful we knew if we put in the hard work in the weight room and outside of it with conditioning we’d get it done.”

Brad Schmit says there was no magic trick that helped the Sailor Football program find success. It was simply hard work, dedication and toughness.

Brad Schmit “We don’t have a ton of numbers like you said that is kind of a statewide, nationwide epidemic but the numbers we havewe are real solid I’d say our top 15 are up there with anybody.”

On Friday, the Sailors will face a Williamsburg football program with postseason experience…but Coach Schmit sees a path to victory.

Schmit “Minimize mental errors minimize our mistakes don’t turn the ball over end each possession with a kick go out and establish the run rally to the football
I like our chances.”
