CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — Drew Foster put the UNI wrestling team back on the map last season. In his final collegiate match, Foster captured the program’s first NCAA title in 19 years.
Panther head coach Doug Schwab doesn’t plan on waiting for the next one.
“It will not be 19 years again. I know that,” said Schwab during Monday’s media day, “I know what I see in the room. I know the work that guys are putting in. I know the belief that they have.”
Foster may be gone, but the Panthers return three All-Americans in seniors Bryce Steiert, Max Thomsen, and junior Jacob Holschlag. Three others, Jay Schwarm, Taylor Lujan, and Oklahoma State transfer Keegan Moore, are NCAA qualifiers, and they expect to build on Foster’s success.
“Of course you believe it, but when you see it happen,” said Lujan, “it makes you feel like I can do that, so it gives you a little more confidence.”
“Now it’s kind of time to start making that a tradition and get a 2020 champ, a 2021 champ, a 2022 champ,” added Thomsen.
UNI opens their dual season at Northwestern on November 17.
