Pete Buttigieg jumps to second in Iowa State University/Civiqs poll

Ames (KWWL) — South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg is gaining momentum in Iowa, according to the latest Iowa State University/Civiqs poll.

Twenty percent of likely caucus-goers say Buttigieg is their top choice out of the Democatic presidential candidates.

He is second in the poll behind Senator Elizabeth Warren; she has 28-percent support.

“You can attribute some of his momentum to basic retail politics. Buttigieg is incredibly well organized and is spending a lot of resources in Iowa. His presence at the Iowa Steak Fry last month was better than any other candidate, ” said Dave Peterson, a professor and Whitaker Lindgren faculty fellow in political science who organized the poll.

Senator Bernie Sanders is in third with 18 percent and Former Vice President Joe Biden is in fourth with 12 percent.

They were tied for second in the September poll.

The online poll was sent to selected members of the Civiqs research panel. Nearly 600 likely caucus-goers were polled.

Likely caucus-goers are those who said they would “definitely” or “probably” attend the Iowa Democratic Caucuses and identified as Democrats or independents.

The Iowa State University/Civiqs poll is funded by the Iowa State’s Department of Political Science, Catt Center for Women and Politics, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Office of the Vice President for Research and the Whitaker-Lindgren Faculty Fellowship.
