IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) – A school board member for the Iowa City Community School District says releasing a video of the accident between a district van and a 12-year-old student should emphasize safety going forward.
“We’re always going to make sure transportation is safer and that our employees are well-trained,” board member JP Claussen said. “I’m sure it’s going to be a great wake-up call.”
Driver Corey Turner can be seen using his phone while stopped on Burlington Street, headed west. Turner then puts the phone aside while turning onto Governor Street as a child rides into the van on a scooter, attempting to cross Governor Street.
“It’s hard to tell but it looked like maybe both folks weren’t paying attention,” Claussen said. “It really is a call to traffic safety.”
Iowa City Police investigators referred the case from Sept. 24 to the Johnson County attorney’s office, who found the incident didn’t constitute a hit and run, since Turner returned to the scene.
The district says Turner is on leave until officials can find a “non-driving” position for him.
Court records show Turner has two previous speeding tickets and one failure to yield.
