DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) — Students at Loras College, University of Dubuque, and Clarke University can get a free ride on the bus Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
The city of Dubuque partnered with the area colleges to offer the Night Rider program to students to keep them safe. The night bus route makes stops at bars and restaurants on lower Main St., Central and 20th st., the Milwork district and will also make stops at the two casinos on an on-call basis.
Russ Stecklein, the city’s transportation field manager says the night rider program keeps students and the rest of the public safe in the areas of town that are busier on the weekends.
“Then at the end of the night having a safe way home and to make sure that there just isn’t individuals that might be victimized as stumbling up the street or intoxicated subjects bothering some of the neighbors.”
The bus makes pick ups at all three of the college districts and takes students from bar to bar as well.
Stecklein says there is a small fee included in a student’s tuition that funds the program. Students must show the bus driver their student ID to ride for free.
All residents of Dubuque can also ride the Night Rider for the standard bus fare.
