DES MOINES, Iowa. (WHO) – A Drake University men’s basketball player is being charged after police say he lied about a shooting that injured another student.
Tremell Murphy, 22, is charged with making a false report to law enforcement and accused of violating the city’s ordinance prohibiting the discharge of a firearm in city limits.
Des Moines Police were called the 1100 block of 27th Street in August for a report of an injured person.
Witnesses say the victim had fallen and struck his head. He suffered serious injuries.
Officers found a bullet hole in a wall near the suspect and determined the adjacent room belonged to Murphy.
Murphy told police he had a gun in his room, but insisted Miller was injured in a fall.
Police later found a shell casing in Murphy’s room.
Doctors then determined the victim’s injuries were caused by a gunshot.
Police say Murphy admitted to handling a gun in his room when it accidentally fired. He also admitted to withholding information from police.
In a statement, Drake University says Murphy was immediately removed from team activities.
