Skateboarding class teaches girls confidence

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) – One Dubuque skateboarding class is teaching girls confidence through kick flips.

SheSkates Dubuque is a skateboarding class offered through the Dubuque Parks and Leisure Services.

Izzy Mejia, Founder of SheSkates Dubuque, only began skateboarding six months ago. However, while visiting other skate parks, she noticed something was missing. There weren’t any other girls.

“I remember, I was in Door County, and I sat in my car for 30 minutes contemplating if I should get out because every single person at that park was male and I was the only female on a skateboard,” said Mejia.

Which is why she and Maria Mojhadam took it upon themselves to get more girls into the action. Because, beyond flips and ollies, the lessons these girls learn will last a lifetime.

“Once you move past that barrier and realize that fear is something you can overcome and control, then I know Izzy has taken that outside of class, and it’s really cool,” said Mojhadam.

Mejia said that these lessons will be passed down from one generation to the next.

“It’s having that comfortability going to a female and looking up to them,” said Mejia  And then one day maybe being like ‘Well, I was taught by a female, and now I can teach others.'”

SheSkates offers classes twice a week for girls ages five to fourteen. Enrollment is still open and costs $15.
